Dog Portraiture: Capturing a Timeless Moment with your Celebrity Pooch

Who ever said dogs don’t have a personality must have missed how candid these adorable babies can be when the camera starts clicking capturing their expressions and images despite the annoying bright lights of the studio and camera flashes.

Dog portraits? Why not?

Your lovable pet can be immortalized in a dog art or portraits done especially for him.  Capturing your dog’s moments in dog drawings done by a versatile portraiture artist is equally mesmerizing as the one’s captured on photography.  Pets, especially dogs can be so adorable in their own portraits. Pet photography can be done in fun and enjoyable ways.  Pets can have that candid shots with a little effort from pet owners, photographers and artists.  The portrait images of your lovable dog be it in photograph, film or drawings will immortalize those moments you’ve shared together.  Capturing your dog’s moments are worth for keeps.

Since they are quite different from human photography.  It may be a bit surprising and sometimes difficult to handle or take a perfect shot.  Thus, making some few techniques and adjustments to capture that one single moment to make them immortal is highly needed.  However, you need a few preparations before the shoot or drawing session.  Here are a few tips on how to get the best photo shoot or drawing session for your adorable pets:

  • Choose a dog photographer or artist who has the most experience. Search and find out someone who has the expertise to photograph or draw your dog.
  • Treat your dog during the session. You must be ready for some tantrums since posing may take some time which could trigger their attitude.
  • The photographer must know the right angle and poses appropriate for your dog. A visit to the studio to view some of his works can give you ideas on what poses or captures you wanted to make during the actual photo shoot or drawing session.
  • Practice the pose at least before going to the studio. Tricks like giving him treats to get a desired pose could be helpful.
  • Groom your dog. Grooming him before the photo shoot or drawing session could give your dog an added factor to get that desired pose or angle.
  • Dressing up and gadgetry. Dogs are adorable if they are dressed up or wear some accessories or gadgets during the photography or drawing session. It will make a unique capture creating an expression only for your dog.
  • The funnier, the better. Remembering your dogs in their happiest is what should be the prime capture.  Caught them in their most candid pose.
  • Bring along your dog’s favorite toys and things. This will help in stabilizing an angle or pose.  Pamper your dogs during the session.  Treating him with his favorite biscuit or toy can help in capturing a candid shot or angle.
  • Your participation during the session is highly needed. You can help in tickling or perking your dog to come to an angle.  Your dogs enjoys your company and therefore the best candid scenes can be captured with you around or better with you joining in the photograph or drawing.
  • Choose a nice portrait frame or canvass to mount dog drawings or photographs.

Capturing a dog art, be it in photographs or dog drawings is a once in a lifetime experience.  Dogs portraits lovingly hung among family portraits are one touching example of how dogs and other pets play an important role in a family.  The moment might not be repeated again thus every dog owner should seize the opportunity to make the session the most memorable one.  For the image that will be captured will be immortally hold in the dog owner’s cherished memories.

Cadaver Dogs: The Sherlock Bones of the K-9 Police

cadaver-dog5

The powerful sense of smell.

One of the dog’s natural trait is its astounding sense of smell. In fact, a dog’s sense of smell is 100 times accurate and stronger than any human.  Thus, there is a particular classification of working dogs whose noses and their keen sense of smell have been developed to do an important role in crime forensics.  These dogs are called cadaver dogs. A cadaver dog is a classification of a search and rescue canine who are further categorized as ‘airscenting’ or trailing dogs.

Cadaver dogs are specially trained canines to trace and follow the scent of a decomposing human flesh.  Although their task was not a pretty thing to do and not the ordinary canine task of search and rescue, their job was vital not only to the families of a crime’s victims but pretty much helpful to the justice system that need a body to prove a crime. These dogs deal on the detection of scent of decomposing bodies above the soil and ground.  The same principle in a canine’s search and knowhow of where he last buried his bone.

Breed and training.

Although breed is not a factor for being a cadaver dog, but a well-built dog is needed to endure long hours of search and trailing. Training for a cadaver dog starts at the age range from 9 to 18 months. Training can take up from 4 to 18 months to complete allowing the dog to properly mature and develop their aptitude and skills in their sense of smell.  Aside from searching and locating cadavers on crime related assignments, they are also trained on various types of assignments such as disaster response and rescue.

Smell and Fetch!

It is said that the task of a cadaver dog can be the biggest challenge in a forensic investigation. Finding a corpse that may have been hidden on piles of dirt, soil and other rubbles is always a difficult place to be especially for humans. But canines whose role was to seek for the scent of a decomposing body the task was just an ordinary play of seeking an object given some point of scent their handler would give them to seek about. It is basically an ordinary game of ‘Fetch!’ to them no matter how stinky the object of the game was.  In order to give due credits to a few of these cadaver dogs whose immense contribution in bringing and finding justice to the bodies they’ve found. In human remains detection, a canine’s nose knows best and can be relied upon in helping solve forensic cases.

Memoirs of a Beloved Furry Friend

maria-sharp2

Chubby was not just a dog. To Maria, a 23 year old photographer in Cleveland, Chubby was more than half of her life. But some things does not really last forever. Even life itself. For Maria it was a difficult decision to make. Over the years, Chubby has gone ill and her health deteriorated due to a disease – cognitive dysfunction, the equivalent of Alzheimer’s to humans.  Seeing her suffered despite her everyday usual routine cheering up Maria and making her day glow since she was a seven year old little girl.  Chubby was her best friend, a cherished little sister. They grew together, they have lived together along with their home grown family for the last 16 years. Chubby was her favourite part of her being, her life.

A Pound dog finds a home and a family.

maria-sharp1

Her family got Chubby from a pound. They grew up and enjoy life together. She remembers disturbing her impatiently from her puppy naps just to be able to be and play with her,  Whenever there are guests visiting at their home, she would often greet, “Do you want to see my dog?!” rather than saying “Hi” first. Chubby has witnessed so far the most important part of Maria’s life.

Chubby’s Alzheimer

The dog has gone into life changing ordeal being at her old age. A couple of years back, cataracts strikes first followed by the loss of her hearing and other old age symptoms follows through. She lost traction of her paws, sleeplessness and just wanders going around in circles. An ordeal Maria couldn’t stand watching it and just simply broke her heart watching and thinking she’s suffering.  The Vet recommended a supplement and later on pills to help her out.  Chubby also cannot climb up anymore to her bed leading to a series of bed replacements to comfort her. Then she started throwing up and stopped eating.  Some medicines don’t seem to work for her soon. Her anxiety and sleeplessness continue. Maria knows time is coming soon to her beloved pet but somehow she has not anticipated it sooner.  Her blood works are fine but the x-ray reveals gallstones. Surgery was an option but Chubby was way too weak to go through it. The medicines might work but really no guaranty it could remove the stones.  For 3 day in a row she did not take any food. And the very tough decision has to be done.

Chubby’s memoir in images.

As Maria decided to choose the day for Chubby to be put down, she thought of documenting their last days together with the help of a friend photographer, Suzanne Price.  Some of Maria’s memoirs of her dearest best bud can be viewed through her website, just click the image of Maria and her late dog Chubby above to get to the link of her website.

Lactose Intolerance and Your Dog

dog-with-ice-cream

Summer is one of those months where some of our canine pals sometimes got to have the so called lactose intolerance.  Feeding them much ice cream and cold dairy products can make them uncomfortable and in pain because of the condition called lactose intolerance.

What is lactose intolerance?

Lactose intolerance or hypolactasia is the inability of adults to digest lactose. Lactose is the sugar found in milk and other dairy produce.

Why does the body need lactose?

Lactose is needed in the body because of their high nutritional value and bioactive properties in improving health and wellness. The lactase enzyme in our body system and those of our pets are in abundance at birth and helps us thrive on our mother’s milk.  But as we grow old the body production of the enzyme diminishes and drops to a level of about 10% of its peak production making us prone to lactose intolerance.

How does lactose intolerance affect dogs?

Lactose intolerance is a common digestion disorder in dogs because dogs don’t have the key enzyme called lactase needed to digest lactose. Since the undigested lactose can’t be absorbed by the body system it remains in the intestines causing symptoms like upset tummies, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea which can lead to severe dehydration. However, depending on the dog’s metabolism, the effect and symptoms varies in several ways for different type of dogs.

Lactose in milk.

Although lactose is found in milk, this does not however mean that milk is ‘unhealthy’ for dogs.  In fact it is an excellent source of protein and calcium for dogs that are able to tolerate it.

First aid and relief for lactose intolerance in dogs.

The best rule of thumb in detecting if your dog is lactose intolerant is simply to limit or discontinue feeding of the particular dairy produce to help your dog recover. While limiting is the immediate relief, moderation is the key to health in in the intake of lactose replenishing food.

Integrating protein and calcium rich dog treats.

Since most of our pets are no longer pups thriving on their mom’s breast milk for their natural healthy supply of protein and calcium needs. A brilliant way to integrate protein and calcium rich milk and dairy products in your pets’ diet is through giving them protein rich dog treats from time to time.  MILKOTEIN is unique all natural dog treat with the highest level of protein than any other products in the market today.

Milkotein on lactose intolerance.

300x250 (1)

Milkotein is made from the hard variety of yak’s milk called Chhurpi. During the process of making the Chhurpi cheese, most of the lactose of the milk were retained and strained away on the whey residue of the cheese during the coagulation process. The resulting cheese is virtually lactose-free and therefore will not pose indigestion and lactose intolerance to your dog.

Saving Excalibur! (Updated)

excalibur3

Mom got infected for her dedication to care for the sick.

Teresa Romero Ramos, 44 a nurse from Spain was the first person who was diagnosed with the deadly Ebola virus outside West Africa. She got the virus from the Spanish missionaries Manuel Garcia Viejo and Miguel Pajares, both came from missions in West Africa. Ramos was the nurse assigned to care for the two missionaries which both have died from the virus last month. Along with her husband, Javier Limon, the couple were now in separate isolation in Carlos III hospital in Madrid.

Dad plead for help.

Recently, Ramos’s husband, Javier in an effort managed to forward a message from his hospital room claiming Madrid health officials are asking his consent to enter their house to get their dog whom officials thought might also be infected with the virus.  Javier told that before leaving the house and going to the hospital he had filled the bath and several buckets with water and left 15 kilo sack of dog food. He also left the terrace door open for the dog to do his necessities.  Javier could not agree on putting their dog down to solve the infection the easy way.  All he ever wanted was to also put the dog in quarantine like they did to him and his wife.  The officials later told him they will be getting a court order to enter their house and put down their pet dog, Excalibur.  Javier’s message was sent to his friends and colleagues with the appeal to get it on social media via a co-nurse of his wife. The recipient then confirmed the authenticity of the message before publishing it on social media.  Javier’s appeal were picked up by several Spanish newspaper. The daily El Mundo even managed to get a quick five-minute phone interview with Javier and posted it in their website.  Javier also told the reporter that his wife had followed all health safety protocols yet have no idea how they could have gotten infected.

According to the report sent by health officials in Madrid that, “although dogs can’t contact Ebola, it is possible they can transmit the virus to humans.”

An online petition have already attracted 255,000 signatures not to put down Excalibur, the dog thought by Madrid health officials could also have the Ebola virus just because his parents were under quarantine and believed to be infected with the virus.

Why do I have to suffer the consequence?

Animal activists rally over the internet to save the life of an innocent dog a few people in Madrid thought could be infected with Ebola.  The parents of Excalibur believed that their pet dog must also be given the treatment they now are getting, isolated and quarantined. For this they get to have that chance to live despite the deadly virus in their system.  All they request now was for their dog to have an equal treatment he need and killing the dog is not option just to give instant solution to the virus that was now in Madrid due to the negligence of a few human being.  Why must an innocent dog’s life be wasted as an easy solution to a human failure?

Update: as of Oct, 24, 2014

nina-pham-bentley

GREAT NEWS!!!

The test result of Bentley, the quarantined dog of Nina Pham, the nurse that contacted Ebola caring for Eric Duncan, the first Ebola patient who died in the US was released negative of the virus!

Now the thought about the case of Excalibur:   Had he been treated the same as Bentley, Excalibur must have been alive today. May Excalibur’s sacrificial death brought fresolution of this disease. RIP Excalibur!

Read more about it HERE

Update: as of Oct, 10, 2014

rainbow-bridge

the rainbow bridge opens wide for Excalibur

As the whole humanity worries about the effect of the Ebola virus, Spain has to do what has to be done in order to serve and protect the greater risk on the uncertainty and behavior of the threatening deadly virus to humans. Madrid, equipped with a court order got to the couple’s apartment and took the dog. The Regional Agency issued a statement that it had put down Excalibur, his corpse  was put in a biosecurity device and cremated last Oct. 7, 2014 in an authorized disposal facility.

Excalibur’s death sealed  what could have been the case of Ebola exposure through the canine of what experts say ‘they are uncertain of what risk that poses to humans.’

Lazarus: The Dog Who Comes Back to Life!

lazarus3

An amazing battle with death.

The dog came to the shelter last August 19, with cut and bloody after his owner dropped him off after surviving a car accident as told by Capt. Bobby Blankenship, the city shelter supervisor . Even the Vet wonders how did he survived the accident. The shelter tried to find him a new home but nobody wants him. Thus on the evening of Sept. 10, the Vet came to conduct the procedure to euthanize the dog who nobody wanted to adopt. As the shelter policy, if the dog has been up for adoption for over a week and nobody would adopt the canine, it will be scheduled for euthanasia. His tag noted that he was scheduled to be put down and the procedure schedule will be administered on Sept. 10, 2014.

Nothing but a nap.

Euthanasia is nothing but a restful nap to this black and brown ,mixed breed mutt where officers and staff of the shelter saw what they believed as a miraculous ‘risen from the dead’ ordeal of a 4 year-old male dog using a dose of lethal chemical injection. But the procedure somehow failed and the dog survived.

Once is not enough.

Animal control officer Wanda Snell witnessed the Vet injected the lethal injection. After the injection, the Vet checked the canine’s heartbeat the first time but felt a faint heartbeat still thus he administered a second dose of the deadly substance and injected it once more. And as he lay still and thought to be dead, Snell head for home that night.  The dog’s dead body was left overnight in a pen

What she couldn’t understand was how the dog could survive the killing effect of the drug injected to him twice and bounce back to life overnight?

A risen dog named Lazarus.

After all what he has gone through, the shelter staff found him a fitting name – Lazarus, the man Jesus brought back to life in the Holy Bible.

The risen dog found a home.

When Cortney Blankenship posted and campaigned the story of the dog on Facebook, the fate of the unwanted dog twisted anew. Other claim for the dog surfaced.  But Lazarus now was now under the care of Jane Holston of Helena. Lazarus was happy with his new housemate Tucker, another rescue dog living along with the Holston family.

A puzzling new life.

Although diagnosed with a heart worm disease, Lazarus was under medication.  The damaged leg from the car accident was mended and casted.  Life to Lazarus may have been going through all those ordeals. Although many may not survive what he has gone through as science still find its way how things have happened. Dr. Robert Lofton of Auburn University said such cases are rare but could also be the case of mishandling due to improper dose of the lethal chemical or needle procedure.
